The Handsome Warrior
The Handsome Warrior
Saturday evening as I was leaving the Powwow in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma, I had already put my cellphone in my purse and how I wish I would
have kept it out to take a picture of the most wonderful scene.
A handsome warrior was standing, talking to his mother or
wife. I could not tell the age of the warrior because of his regalia and face
paint. His natural stance showing strength, honor, and composure filled me with
such admiration that I told this man that I loved him as I walked by.
He turned to look at me and saw my eyes widen as I realized
what I had said. I tried, without avail, to explain the different love that I
spoke of. Motioning with my hands the length of his raiment, concerned that the
woman he was speaking with was his wife. My hand motions only made his
perplexity heighten. As you know, I am a single, straight woman and I recognize
a good-looking man when I see one, because he was. I did not attempt to flirt
with him in any way. It was the longing of my ancestral heritage that made me
love him so.
I still see him in the recess of my mind. The strong,
determined, warrior standing to reunite the past bringing it forward for the
here and now to preserve our future as Cherokee.
On this day as America celebrates Labor Day, how could I not share photos of my labor of love for my artistic ability, writing career, and heritage?
May God bless you and yours! May God bless the Cherokee, my
heritage, for the future of our nation. And may the Cherokee Nation live and
prosper in this world. Have a blessed and safe Labor Day.
Love always,
Laveda D.
