Mitten According to Mr. Kinder PART TWO
short story by Laveda D, Rockford continued:
Mr. Kinder
contacted a private investigator and asked him if he could find out how much
his neighbors had saved for their future. Because of Mitt’s medical issues and
special needs, his mother had not been able to save much.
Mitt, on
the other hand, thought that they were saving enough to buy a house very soon.
There was one thing that made him sad. What if they found a house and it was
far away from his one and only friend Mr. Kinder? Mr. Kinder was the glue that
held his otherwise solitary life together. No friends to play with, no dad,
just his mother. He loved his mother very much, but he needed Mr. Kinder, the
male figure he so longed for in his life.
Mitt could
talk to Mr. Kinder about boy things and the concern that he had for his mother.
And the adventurous stories that Mr. Kinder told him about allowed him to
experience them in a different way. He found out that he could use his
imagination and become the main character in the story.
One
adventure Mr. Kinder told him about involved digging for treasure.
The next
day was Saturday, no school today so Mitt found a small tablecloth, a garden
trowel, a magnifying glass, and sunglasses. He wrapped the small tablecloth
around his shoulders and tucked it into the top of his tee shirt. Then picking
up his “treasure hunting equipment,” he went outside and walked into the backyard
and started digging for treasure.
When his
mother had not heard from him for a while, she went outside to investigate. To her
surprise, Mitt had dug little pits through the sod in the backyard. She started
to get onto him, but the scene of him looking through the magnifying glass at
some small object in his soil covered hand stopped her from saying anything. In
fact, she joined him on his first big adventure.
